Where is your heart?
Growing up, my little corner of the universe was filled with many treasures. Dolls. Trinkets. Plastic jewelry that sparkled brightly. There were many beautiful things that surrounded me in my younger years.
It wasn't until I was a teenager--and my treasures taken from me--that I began to understand the value of material possessions. Yes, they can be beautiful. They can sparkle and illuminate. They can make an empty house full.
But they are only temporary.
They can be stolen. They can be lost. They can collect dust. They can fall apart. They can be destroyed.
I'm no longer interested in surrounding myself with worldly treasures. Now that I'm older--and a little wiser--I'm interested in storing up Heavenly treasure. The kind that "moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:20)
So, where is your heart?
If you're only interested in amassing trinkets and treasures in this world, maybe your heart isn't where it's supposed to be.
Don't fret. There's still time to set your heart right.
Here are some verses to help you focus on the right kind of treasure:
"The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." (Galatians 5:22-23)
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10)
"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." (Matthew 5:43)
"Love the Lord your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." (Mark 12:30)
Today, you may be wrestling with the desire to obtain more. From time-to-time, I struggle with this as well. We live in a world that is constantly telling us that what we have is not enough. Everywhere we look, it's being screamed at us.
But Jesus promised us this: "In my Father's house there are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)
You may not live in a mansion here on Earth, but Jesus is busy preparing your mansion in the sky. Set your heart on things above. God is not holding out on you.
