If there's one thing Oklahomians do well, it's Halloween. From fog machines powered by propane tanks to entire driveways covered in fake spider webs, the town of Pryor knows how the welcome Halloween.
I noticed it two days ago when my husband and I were driving home from my in-laws' house. As I looked down each street, I started noticing the amount of Halloween/Fall decorations lining the front lawns of almost every house. If you have seen Californians go all out with their Christmas lights, you have to see the Halloween lights around here. They're magnificent! Twinkling oranges, whites and purples. They could almost give Del Mar's Holiday Lights a run for their money.
The spooky ambiance reminds me of my youth. When we'd pull out the Halloween/Fall decorations and spend an entire Saturday decorating the house with multicolored leaves and pumpkins. And then there were those trips to Bate's Nut Farm to pick out our pumpkins. We'd drive up to Valley Center with the changing leaves to see who could find the biggest pumpkin. Those were good days for my brother and me. And they ended much too soon.
I know Halloween is viewed differently to all sorts of people. Some boycott it; others relish in it's darkness. But I like to look at it as the start to the Holiday Season. That's what it has always been to me. Whether I was dressed up as Cinderella, a ballerina, or in my pajamas watching old movies at home, Halloween is the beginning of my favorite time of year. And it's kind of a big deal around here. Which makes being in a new place a comfort to this California girl.
